MR. E.T. Candy

Mr. Justice E.T. Candy, I.C.S. : Mr. Justice E.T. Candy was a well- known oriental scholar. After passing I.C.S. he came to India in 1865. He was very well-versed in Marathi and Hindustani. In 1889 he was appointed as Judge of the High Court, and was a party to many important judgments on the Appellate Side. About 1898, he presided over one of the most protracted and spectacular criminal trials in the High Court Sessions, that of Clive Durant. There was no trace of malice or judicial bias in Mr. Candy although he was very unpopular with the Bar. Mr. Candy was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bombay more than once. He also did important work in connection with the Indian Universities and Police Commissions appointed by Lord Curzon.
