Mr. R. S. MOHITEB.Sc.,LL.B. Appointed on 12.10.2001as an Additional Judge of the Mumbai High Court, Honourable Justice RajivShyamrao Mohite is amongst the youngest judges to be appointed as a Judgein the Bombay High Court. Born on 6.12.1956 intoa non-legal family, his father being an Air Force Officer, his schoolingincluded a stint in the King Georges School, an institution run by the Indian Army. He obtained a degree in Science from K.J.Somaiya College in Mumbai and later a degree in Law from Government Law College, Mumbai. He enrolled as an Advocatein Mumbai on 17.11.1978 and founded a Charitable Trust known as the "LegalAid Society of Bombay" to which his early years were devoted. In 1979,he joined the chambers of renowned advocate Shri M.A.Rane, with whose chamber he was associated till 1981. In the following years he established a sizable practice in Mumbai, in the Civil, Service, Criminal and Constitutional fields of Law, conducting several hundred cases of various kinds, several of which have been reported by Indian Law Journals, espousing liberal causessuch as the right of maintenance to Muslim Women and Right of Housing to Slum Dwellers. In 1992-93, he taught the subjects of Civil Procedure, Arbitration and Limitation in the Government Law College, recognised as a premiere law institution in India. He has been invited by the Bar Council of Maharashtra to lecture on legal topics at law colleges and to participate in legal seminars organised for the benefit of Advocates in District Bar Associations. He is also the author of articles published in Law Magazines and has appeared in several Television programmes espousing liberal and humanitarian causes. He has been actively involved in causes relatingto the protection of environment. |
