Honourable Shri. Prabodh Dinkarrao Desai succeeded Justice Chittatosh Mookerjee as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on 7th January 1991.

His Lordship was born on December 14, 1930 at Bharuch , Gujarat State and his primary and secondary education was at Bharuch. His Lordship joined the St. Xavier's College at Bombay and graduated in Arts in 1950 with Honours . His Lordship obtained the Master's Degree in Advanced Economics in 1952. Simultaneously, prosecuted study in law at Govt. Law College, Bombay and obtained the LL.B. Degree in the year 1953. His Lordship joined the Bar on the Appellate Side of the Bombay High Court in 1955 and practised there till the bifurcation of the State of Bombay in 1960. Thereafter he shifted to Ahmedabad. His Lordship was Professor of Constitutional Law in the City Law College, Ahmedabad in the year 1967-68. His Lordship was appointed as an Additional Judge of Gujarat High Court on February 19,1970 and was made permanent Judge on April 24, 1974. His Lordship was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court on 15.3.1983 and he continued to hold the said office till September 23, 1983. His Lordship assumed the charge of office of the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on and from 23.12.1983. His Lordship was transferred as Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court on November 14, 1988. Also acted as the Acting Governor of Himachal Pradesh from March 7, 1985 to April 16, 1985. His Lordship was transferred and took over as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on 7th January, 1991. His Lordship has given many important decisions in different branches of law such as Constitutional Law, Taxation and Company Law, Labour Laws, Motor Accidents Compensation Law, Civil Law etc. His Lordship had made significant contribution in the field of Public Interest Litigation. His Lordship was appointed as a member of the Arrears Committee appointed by the Government of India on January 17, 1989.

His Lordship in his judicial pronouncement demonstrated his legal acumen, sharp intellect and deep understanding of human nature. His Lordship introduced the innovative Pretrial, In-trial and Post-trial Conciliation Scheme in the Subordinate Courts in Himachal Pradesh with the end in view of dispensing expeditious and substantial justice to a large number of litigants waiting for justice. His Lordship retired as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on 14th December, 1992.
