He was
born on 30 September 1900 in Bombay and was educated at St. Xavier's
High School and passed his intermediate examination from St. Xavier's
College in 1919. He further studied Modern Hostory at Lincoln
College, Oxford and passed his B.A. in 1922. He was called to the
Bar on 28 June 1922 by Inner Temple. He returned to India and
applied for practicing at Bombay High Court on 14 September 1922.
He joined the Chamber of Mahammed Ali Jinna and was elevated to the
Bench of Bombay High Court on in 1941. He became first Indian
Chief Justice on 15 August 1947after resignation of Chief Justice Sir
Leonard Stone, the last British Chief Justice.
He was acting Governor for short time in 1956. In September 1957
he was appointed adhoc Judge of International Court of Justice at The
Hague. He was a member of the delegation to United Nations.
He appointed Ambassador to U.S.A. in July 1958 and subsequently High
Commissioner to U.K. and Education Minister in Nehru's Cabinet.
He represented India before the U.N. Seurity Council on Kashmir issue
in 1964. He become External Affairs Minister in Indira Gandhi's
Cabinet in 1966. He was also the Vice Chancellor of the Bombay
University and Chairman of the Law Commission. He practiced in
the Supreme Court and died on 9 February 1981.
