He was born on 30 December 1887
in the town of Bharuch in Gujarat. He did his early education in
R.S. Dalal High School in Bharuch. He joined Bombay High Court
for keeping terms for Advocate (O.S.) examination and applied for
practicing as Advocate on 17 October 1912. He joined the
Chamber of Bhulabhai Desai in 1913 and practised mainly on the Original
Side and was in close association with Jinnah, Tilak, Annie Besant,
Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Sardar Patel. He was Home Minister of
Bombay in 1937. He was India's Agent-General in Hyderabad.
He was Union Food Minister and Governor of Uttar Pradesh. He was
an author of novels, dramas, memoirs and history, in Gujarati and
English. He was in and out of Politics between 1946 and
1957. He was a member of the Constituent Assembly. He
established Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Bombay. He died on 8
February 1971.
