He was
born on 14 April 1891 at Mhow, Central India. He had his early
education at Dapoli, Ratnagiri District, Satara, and Elphinstone High
School in Bombay. He completed his B.A. from Elphinstone College in
1913. He further studied at Columbia University and London School of
Economics and Political Science. He enrolled at the Gray's Inn Columbia
University conferred Ph.D in 1917. He was called to the Bar in April
1923. He returned to India and practised
in
the Bombay High Court. He taught
at Government Law College as
Professor from 1928 and became its Principal in 1935. He was elected to
the Constituent Assembly and
became Chairman of the drafting Committee. In 1952 Columbia University
conferred Hon. LL.D. Degree. He died on 6 December 1956. In 1990,
he was posthumously awarded India's highest civilian honor the Bharat
Ratna.
