Sir
Mathew Richard Sausse, was the first Chief Justice of Bombay High
Court . Nothing much is known about him, except that he was a
reserved and retiring man averse to mixing in society; so much so,
it is said, that he never entered the Government House, nor joined a
club nor attended any dinner or social function, and he never read
newspapers. His only recreation was a solitary ride in the evening
along with sea beach. He was austere and exclusive in his attitude and
was known as "Sausse the Silent", believing in the ideal of the chill
isolation of Judges. He was a devout Roman Catholic, and regularly
attended the Mass on Sunday morning in the Roman Catholic Chruch at
Girgaum.
